Johann Kwon is a South Korean based in Hong Kong since 2016. He has been in the F&B industry for around 15 years including part-time jobs at the very early stage of his life, so he was able to experience most of the positions related to FOH operations (food runner, waiter, captain, head waiter, assistant manager, general manager), and eventually decided to take a serious step into the wine world around 10 years ago. He worked in several different Asian countries, including Afghanistan (as a soldier), South Korea, India, Japan, and Hong Kong, and Hong Kong was the place he truly fell in love with, because of its diversity and unrivaled dynamic F&B scene.
Currently, Johann is working as Executive Head Sommelier at Black Sheep Restaurants, managing the wine programs of 10+ venues in the group with his wonderful sommelier team members. He personally considers himself not only a wine sommelier but a 'hospitalian', and for him, the 'WINE' means story, emotion, romance, and memory he wants to share with his guests.
Johann is an Advanced sommelier at Court of Master Sommeliers, and currently studying for the Master Sommelier exam.
"It's very meaningful for me to see finally HK can restart holding this kind of events as 'F&B hub city' of Asia after three consecutive years of serious depression in the industry due to the covid pandemic, and I can't wait to see how many of new exciting and passionate producers' beverages will be presented at the HK IWSC.
In addition, one of the best parts of HK IWSC would be doing the 'blind' tasting without knowing the producer, and it will make us truly evaluate and feel the quality of the wine by itself rather than the winery's reputations, our expectations to the certain producers, etc."
